Venlafaxine (Effexor)

Venlafaxine (Effexor) a new anti-depressant drug which has been very effective in treating depression. This medicine affects the chemical messengers within the brain, which are known as neurotransmitters. If these neurotransmitters face any kind of imbalance, the person may face depression. Venlafaxine (Effexor) is believed to enhance the action of neurotransmitters. This in turn reduces depression. Presently, this medicine is available all over the world.

Venlafaxine (Effexor) is prescribed for patients suffering from depression, depression with associated symptoms of anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder. It is prescribed for the treatment of adults who have panic disorder. Thus, both children as well as adults can take this medicine after consulting a doctor properly.

Venlafaxine (Effexor) should be taken with food, in correct doses as directed by a physician. The doses that are prescribed may vary from one person to another. The effects of the medicine cannot be noticed prior to 1-2 weeks. The medicine can also be taken with applesauce.

If the medicine is in the form of a capsule or tablet, the ingredients can be sprinkled on applesauce and then taken.

Venlafaxine (Effexor) may result into life-threatening interactions if they are taken with MAO inhibitors like Nardil and Parnate. Venlafaxine (Effexor), like any other anti-depressant, can cause nausea, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, drowsiness, and loss of appetite. Apart from this, increased blood pressure may also occur. Thus, the blood pressure of the patient should be monitored regularly. Seizures have been reported at times. It should also be noted that if anti-depressants are discontinued suddenly, dizziness, headache and nausea may be caused. Apart from these, changes in the mood or changes in the sense of smell and taste may also take place. Thus, the dosage of the medicine should be reduced slowly.
