Headache Due to Anxiety

Headache due to anxiety is a common ailment nowadays. There is a close relationship between anxiety, depression and frequent headache. Headache due to anxiety is a symptom and not any disease. It can also be called as tension headache, the most common form of all headache types. In this headache, the anxiety-stricken person suffers from a painful feeling of a band around his/her head.

Causes of Headache in Anxiety
Tension headache occurs primarily due to overwork, anxiety, stress, and depression. The pain may continue for hours, days or weeks without any interruption. When the patient is occupied in any work, the headache may be less noticeable. Headache due to anxiety is caused by muscular or emotional/mental tensions, depression, emotional stress, and too much work pressure. This headache is due to the somatic delusional system. Headache due to anxiety usually disturbs the sleeping pattern of the individual.

The co-morbidity of headache for anxiety may be because of selection bias (like inherent in seeking treatment), genetic factors, shared environmental, or any common underlying process.

Relief from Headache due to Anxiety
Anxiety headaches or tension headaches are also categorized under muscle contraction. This headache can be relieved by relaxation and deep breathing, particularly in lying down position in a calm and peaceful place. You can also practice inverted postures that lead to increased oxygen transportation to the brain and can lessen headache caused by anxiety and strain.

Practice a regular routine of physical exercises, yoga exercises, deep breathing techniques, and meditation and relaxation methods for preventing chronic anxiety headaches or for reducing their severity. Muscle stretching exercises can also release tension and give relief to headaches. For treating both the mood or anxiety disorder and headaches, specific dual-action anticonvulsant, antidepressant, and atypical antipsychotic medications can act as dual agents thus giving relief from both the ailments.
