Shortness of Breath Due to Anxiety

Shortness of Breath Due to Anxiety takes place in an individual suffering from acute anxiety resulting to discomfort or intense fear. Shortness of breath is one of the symptoms associated to anxiety, like heart palpitations, sweating, etc. Shortness of Breath Due to Anxiety is amongst the more troubling symptoms of anxiety. In this condition, the anxiety-stricken person feels as if his/her chest will not expand for accommodating the air required by the body. He/she may also feel sometime that somebody is pushing a pillow into the face for stopping his respiration.

But, this feeling of shortness of breath is only a sensation that is caused by exaggerated impulses of the nerve, and it generally does not harm one as he/she will not really stop breathing, pass out or suffer suffocation.

Causes of Shortness of Breath Due to Anxiety
Shortness of Breath is also known as trouble breathing, dyspnea, or difficulty breathing. People suffering from this condition feel as if they are not getting enough air or are running out of breath.

Though shortness of breath can occur of different cause like strenuous activity, it is most commonly experienced because of anxiety, stress, and overwork. The affected person suffers from the feeling of ?air hunger? as is he/she cannot inhale enough air required for respiration of the body.

Shortness of Breath in Panic Attack
A panic attack, also known as anxiety attack, is a brief period of acute anxiety that causes the physical sensations of fear and worry. These attacks occur frequently, accompanied with shortness of breath, dizziness, racing heartbeat, etc. and are mostly not related to any kind of external threat. This condition can last from few minutes to even half an hour, but the emotional and physical effects of the attack may continue for few hours.

In panic attack, the individual experiences shortness or lack of breath and gapes widely to take in more air. He undergoes a feeling of suffocation or trouble in breathing and feels that his chest cannot expand much to accommodate the required amount of the air.

Treatment of Shortness of Breath Due to Anxiety
Sometimes, anti-anxiety medications are prescribed to the anxiety-stricken individual for preventing shortness of breath. Medicines like Anxiolytic, lorazepam, or Alprazolam are the common ones prescribed for this condition. Physical exercises, deem breathing, meditation, yoga exercises, relaxation, are some of the remedies to prevent anxiety and shortness of breath.
