Coping with Anxiety


Modern lifestyle and competition everywhere has had an impact on the physical and mental health of human beings and when we talk of so many ways that man has been affected, anxiety is one problem that can be named. In today?s world, anxiety attack is a common problem and is one the rise. Work pressure, busy schedule, competition with peers, personal conflicts, all these could be the main reason behind anxiety. When life becomes such stressful, coping with anxiety becomes an utter necessity. Coping with anxiety is to deal with emotions of fear, sadness or anger and try to come to terms with it.

Coping with anxiety is possible when one tries to figure out and understand the stress response of the body. Research shows, there are three levels of stress which the body undergoes. One of the first levels is fighting or fleeing. When the body perceives a threat or any kind of danger, there is a surge of energy that overpowers the body. This energy enables the person to fight with the situation or run away from the danger. The next step is resistance.

One faces this condition, when the danger spans for a longer time i.e. even beyond the fight or the flight period. In this long term stress, there are several kinds of hormonal secretion in the body which help in mobilizing the body.

The last step of coping with anxiety is exhaustion. If the first two stages of the body are completed successfully then only the third stage comes into play. This is when the fatigued body gets to replenish itself. If the body successfully completes the first two stages, it will enter a third stage, exhaustion. This is a time when the fatigued body replenishes itself. Stress is one of the major reasons behind anxiety in the modern world. When a person is facing prolonged danger, there is a secretion of several hormones within the body, which one secreted in excessive amounts can have a damaging effect on the body.

For example adrenaline is useful in the production of energy under stress. However prolonged adrenaline utilization can lead to a weak heart. Hormones like vasopressin and Cortisol are released during the stage of resistance and this can create a rise in the blood pressure as well as an increase in the blood sugar levels. They may even cause narrowing of the arterial walls by increasing in the number of blood platelets.
