Trait anxiety involves a propensity to experience symptoms of anxiety in non-threatening circumstances. While people experiencing State anxiety forms a natural defense mechanism in the face of danger, those having Trait anxiety are always in a state of fear and not just in any one particular situation. Persons with high trait anxiety are known to be more inclined to experiencing state anxiety, to an excessive level.

They are naturally predisposed to such negative feelings even when there is no cause for any tension or worry. Their reaction implies a certain vulnerability to stress.
